Description
This island, which only covers an area of 11 hectares and has about 600 inhabitants, is one of the most picturesque spots anywhere in Bavaria. And word has got around! It is no surprise therefore that in the peak season it can become fairly crowded on Frauenchiemsee. But if you travel across by boat from Gstadt on a clear day in late autumn or early spring, you will be enchanted by the beauty of the island. This was what happened to the fishermen who settled here in pre-historic times, and also the Bavarian duke Tassilo III, who had a convent built here in the 8th century. 100 years later, Frauenwörth became Benedictine, and Benedictine nuns still live in the convent to the present day. Quite a lot is still preserved from the early days of the convent, including the Carolingian gate hall with its 1000-year-old fresco cycle. The minster itself stands on Romanesque foundations. The Gothic ribbed vaulting dates from the 15th century, but the interior fittings together with the eleven altars are baroque. The massive, octagonal church tower with its characteristic onion domed roof is one of the landmarks of the Chiemgau area.
The idyllic little island boasting a monastery, onion-tower minster, hostelries and farmers' gardens is one of the most picturesque spots in Bavaria.
