General description: Knossos

Knossos

Also known as ‘Palace of Minos’, Knossos is the largest Bronze age archaeological site in Crete.

Located in the capital, Heraklion, Knossos was excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in the early years of the 20th century. Evans had marvelous imagination and a tremendous creative fire to create what you can go and explore for yourself today.

The ‘palace’ has an interesting layout which was unique in comparison to palaces of that time. 1.300 rooms are connected with corridors of varying sizes and direction. The palace displays a range of advanced architectural techniques and one part of it is built up to five stories high.

The walls are decorated with images of detailed Cretan life. Many murals display scenes of women and men enjoying activities like fishing and flower gathering and some also portray popular athletic competitions.

There are many stories told and features to point out as you wander throughKnossos. The Throne room is one of particular interest and contains the stone throne.
For only €6 this intriguing ancient monument is definitely a place not to be missed on your vacation to Crete.
