When Prince Yuri Dolgoruki invited friends to carouse with him in Moscow in 1147 on the grounds that this was the best place for partying, there was still no Kremlin, but only a little settlement on a 40 m high hill between the Rivers Moskva, Neglinnaya and Yausa. In any event the celebration was remembered, and is considered as the date of Moscow's foundation. On his next visit in 1156, Dolgoruki gave the order to build a "Kremlin" - in other words, a fortified city castle. However, the Kremlin's first modest wooden palisades offered scant protection against the Tatars. It was only Grand Prince Ivan Kalita, the tax collector for the Tatars who could afford to build the first stone church for the Kremlin, whereupon the head of the Russian Orthodox Church transferred his official seat from Vladimir to Moscow. It was Ivan III who finally invited Italian architects to build the magnificent Kremlin churches and palaces. The Kremlin is not only the nucleus of Moscow but also of the Russian empire, concentrating military power, faith and wealth in itself and in its architecture.
It is the centre of Moscow, Russia and power, as well as a museum, a repository of beautiful churches and the official seat of the President.
