Description
The people of Hamburg have a strange relationship with the visual arts. On the one hand culture is a "state objective" for them, and on the other many seem to have no idea that the "Kunsthalle" is one of the most important art museums in the city. Sure, when there are major exhibitions like the one in 2006 about Caspar David Friedrich, the queue extends down the street. But in the wonderful permanent exhibition you will often not find a single soul. It is always worth paying a visit to the "Kunsthalle" with its freshly renovated exhibition rooms. Visit the Old Masters, in particular the polyptych of Master Bertram, and the Classical Modern section with its principal works ranging from Max Liebermann and Emil Nolde to Pablo Picasso. In the gallery of contemporary art, a cube-shaped building designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers, you will find works by Gerhard Richter, Jeff Koons and Georg Baselitz. In the "Hubertus Wald Forum" there are smaller special exhibitions. You can enjoy a break at Café Liebermann.
One of Germany's most important museums and a must for art lovers.
