Description
It stands at the highest point in the mountain range (457 m), is a landmark that is visible for miles around and is intended to symbolise the unity of the German Empire. Kyffhausen imperial castle was one of the largest castles in Germany to be built during the reign of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa (1122-90). The lower castle is the best-preserved bit, the keep has been restored, and the 176 m deep well is one of the deepest in Europe. The monument was erected for Emperor Wilhelm I in 1896 and its 81 m high tower ends in a crown which offers a tremendous view.
The enormous Kaiser Wilhelm memorial rises above Barbarossa's castle.
