General description: Lough Leane

Lough Leane is the largest of Killarney's 3 famous lakes; Louch Leane (Lower Lake), Muckross Lake (Middle Lake) and Upper Lake.

History from the Middle Ages
Lough Leane means "Lake of Learning" due to the Monastery of Innisfallen which was once the center of scholarship during the early Middle Ages. In the center of the Lower Lake lies Ross Island which is home to Ross Castle which is a typical specimen of an Irish Chieftain's stronghold, built in the middle ages. It has recently undergone major renovations and is open to tourists.

Touring the Lower Lake
Water buses sail across the Lower Lake offering a tour with running commentary - either pre-recorded in several languages or the captains own version.

Getting there
Lough Leane is situated around a mile from the town center and can be reached by following the Muckross road towards Kenmare and turning right into Ross Road.
