Description
A cosmopolitan vibe like no other shopping street in the city can be found on the elegant Mädlerpassage. Suitcase industrialist Anton Mädler had the open thoroughfare built in 1912 and it was modelled on Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The history of the construction can be read on the Grimmaische Straße portal: The sandstone figures with a vase and grapes recall the fact that the building was used as a wine cellar and porcelain exhibition house. The exhibition palace replaced Auerbach's 16th century court. Auerbach's cellar attracts lots of onlookers. Grimmaische Straße is evolving into a popular shopping street. What is striking about House No. 17 is the princely house bay window, which is only preserved as a copy. A passageway leads from the Mädlerpassage to the Messehofpassage: it is modern passage architecture of the highest order (Weis & Volkmann, Leipzig). After the renovation in 2006, only the marble column remained from the sober 1950s style in the former Messehof. What is new is its play on light in lots of different colours, which puts you in the mood for the covered shopping mile leading to the new market which is flooded with daylight. If you love stylish fashion and beautiful home accessories, you will feel right at home here. You can recline on a sofa in a lounge atmosphere right in the heart of the passage and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.
A hint of Milan in Leipzig's most famous shopping arcade, where strollers can enjoy the worldly flair.
