Description
Michel, or rather St Michael's Church, is probably the most important landmark in the city. No other church is so highly regarded by the people of Hamburg. If Michel is going through a hard time, they come and they donate money. Today's splendid baroque building was designed by the architects Johann Leonard Prey and Ernst Georg Sonnin and finally completed in 1786. When a fire completely destroyed the church in July 1906, the state government decided without hesitation to reconstruct it with the same design on the same spot. You should not leave Hamburg without paying a visit to Michel. The best way to see it is to attend the concerts, e.g. those held during the Bach weeks in autumn every year, you will find a very romantic atmosphere at the Christmas concerts and services when the white wood of the balustrade with its gold decorations is only lit up by candles. The tower is 132 m high, and 452 steps lead up to the top (but there is also a lift). Also visit the crypt: It was only opened a few years ago. Hamburg's former musical director Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88) is buried here. The second son of Johann Sebastian Bach took up the post in 1767 as the successor to Georg Philipp Telemann.
The tower of St Michael's Church, affectionately known as the "Michel", is the city's landmark, loved by all Hamburg natives.
