General description: Monument to the Battle of the Nations

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations is a huge monument that attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year.

History of the Monument
It was officially opened in 1913 - 100 years after the European Allies routed Napoleon in the Battle of Nations near Leipzig. The celebrations in October 1913 were a national event. The emperor travelled to be there, along with German princes and representatives of the ruling houses of Sweden, Russia and Austria. Incidentally, the Saxons were one of the losers in 1813, because they were on the side of the French despot. An exhibition at the monument documents the history of its construction. 16 stone warriors keep a vigil in the crypt. The colossal allegoric figures in the Hall of Fame (bravery, strength of belief, empathy with victims and the power of the people) protrude 10 m up into the air. By contrast, the 324 almost life-sized equestrian figures in the dome hall appear almost miniscule. You can experience the excellent acoustics at a performance given by the Battle of Nations Monument choir.

The 100th Anniversary of the Monument of the Battle of Nations in 2012
Until the 100th anniversary of the monument's erection the 300,000 t colossal structure is being overhauled. The view from the 91 m high viewing platform is very impressive. If the ascent via the 364 steps is too much for you, take the lift from the crypt up to the first outer gallery. Forum 1813 at the foot of the monument contains a replica of one of the battlefields around Leipzig. 3500 pewter figures depict, over an area of 18 m2, the battle which took place around the village of Probstheida and whose outcome is said to have broken Napoleon's rule in Europe. There are 350 original exhibits of uniforms, coins and the like.

Inaugurated 100 years after Napoleon's debacle, this monumental structure offers a lovely view of the city from its 91 m high viewing platform.

The Monument to the Battle of Nations is an impressive structure. We visited in Winter when everything was covered in snow and the lake in front was all frozen over. The view from the top is incredible and it was beautiful to see Leipzig sparkling beneath us in the snow. By the face of the monument is a huge sculpture of St Michael. You walk beneath him through the entrance which is quite an experience. I was born at Michaelmas so I've always felt a connection to St Michael. I've uploaded some photos of the Monument and the view i... Read more
