The Moscow Metro system is a rapid transit system that runs through  Moscow and the neighbouring Moscow Oblast towns of Krasnogorsk and Reutov. Opened in 1935 with one 11-kilometre (6.8 mi) line and 13 stations, it was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union.

Most of the metro stations and ticket halls represent historical, cultural and architectural monuments and are protected by the government.

Metro stations are open for passengers daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m and passengers must pay the fare every time they enter metro.
