Description
People liked to give lavish gifts in the days of electoral prince Ferdinand Maria's rule. In the mid-17th century, Henriette Adelaide provided him with a much-longed-for future successor to the throne, Max Emanuel. The proud father rewarded her with Nymphenburg Palace. The front of this baroque palace complex, which was built between 1664 and 1757, is almost 700 m long, which is three times as long as the Olympic stadium. It served as a summer residence for the rulers of Bavaria and anybody who saunters through the splendid chambers can get a sense of how swish life must have been in the heyday of the Bavarian court. Alongside the central building with its magnificent stone room and the gallery of beauties, you can also explore the royal stables museum with the world's most significant collection of carriages, sleighs and crockery and the porcelain museum with precious items made by the manufacturer of the same name. Also worth a visit are the palace grounds with greenhouses, Amalienburg as a showpiece example of courtly baroque architecture, Badenburg with its Chinese wallpaper, the pagoda castle with its chinois decoration that was very much en vogue at the time, and the "Magdalenenklause" which electoral prince Max Emanuel had built as a meditation chapel in his old age.
The pomp and glory of the Bavarian court are displayed in castle, museum and park.
