Reviews: O'Connell Street
General description: O'Connell Street
O'Connol Street is Dublin's main thoroughfare and is famous for being one of teh widest streets in Europe. The O'Connol Street bridge is wider than it is long - the only such bridge in Europe!History, Politics and Architecture
The Grand thoroughfare was created in the 18th Century and was called Sackville street until it was renamed in 1924 in honour of the nationalist leader Daniel O'Donnel. It has been the stage for many a public demonstration and the street is lined with Irish History. It also hosts the world's tallest public art; the Spire of Dublin which was built on the spot where Nelson's Pillar had stood before it was blown up by Republican activists in the 1960s.
