Description
The world's largest park cemetery is much more than just a resting place for Hamburg's dead - it is also a place for outings. The benches beneath the big ancient trees are a great place to reflect on the meaning of life. An outstanding architectural feature is the crematorium, which was built from 1930-32 by Fritz Schumacher (Talstraße | near main entrance). A year later, Hamburg's senior building director was expelled by the Nazis. Many celebrities are buried here, including Hans Albers and Alfred Lichtwark, Gustav Gründgens, Ida Ehre and Heinz Erhardt, with over 200,000 graves spread over a total area of 400 ha, there is thus plenty to see. There is an information centre, a small museum, and on the internet you can download tips for tours.
The largest cemetery in Europe, a fabulous park and many celebrities.
