Old Montreal is the oldest area in the city of Montreal, Quebec. It was once a walled districtand to this day most of it is an historic district. The Ville-Marie, the original name for the settlement that would later become Montreal was founded in 1642.The name Montreal slowly replaced Ville-Marie in the 18th century. The walls protected the city from invasion, however the many wooden buildings caused a lot of fire damage which changed the face of the old town. The fires of 1765 and 1768 destroyed nearly half the buildings in the old city, the city was then rebuilt even more densely.
