General description: Old Town Florence
The Old Town of Florence has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982. Florence is the biggest and culturally most important city in Tuscany.Brief History of Florence
Florence is the capital city of the province of Florence and has around 400,000 inhabitants. It was founded in the 8th Century by the Etruscans. This is where the name Tuscany was derived from. The Romans however arrived 7 years later and named Florence "Florentia" meaning the flowery. Under the Romans the city flourished but when the Roman Empire fell it almost perished until in the 14th and 15th century it blossomed again. This was especially helped by the Medici family. Since the Middle Ages Florence has been a major center of finance and trade. Due to Florence's exciting past and moments of glory many museums and religious buildings can be found here.
