De Oude Kerk
Originally dedicated to St Nicholas the patron saint of sailors, Amsterdam's main church, which stands in what is now the red-light district, was erected in around 1300 and is the city's oldest building. From the outside, the Oude Kerk has an very uneven appearance thanks to repeated extensions over the course of time. Already in 1350 the side naves, originally narrow, were replaced with wider ones. Then the choir was enlarged and an ambulatory added. In the 15th century, several chapels were added, while the central nave and, later, the tower were heightened in the 16th century. Despite the risk of fire, the building was reinforced with wooden beams, as the sandy soil could not otherwise have borne the weight.
Amsterdam's oldest building is a church which dates back to the 14th century and now stands in the red light district, of all places.
