Myth of Parangtritis Beach
According to the legend, when you enter the area of Parangtritis Beach, you are entering the territory of Kanjeng Ratu Kidul,the Queen of the Southern Ocean who is known for not being welcoming to newcomers. Due to this, Javanese people will not wear green or yellow-green asthey believe that this attracts the Queen.

The Beach
The jagged cliffs and the volcanic black sand make a stunning image. The green fauna in the middle of the island make for even stronger contrasts between the water, the sand and the sky.
Adding to the myth, the environment on the island, with its many caves, gravesites and paths add to the mystical story.

Location of Parangtritis Beach
Being one of the favorite tourist destinations in the city, it is conveniently located in the southern part of Yogyakarta province, about 40 kilometers away from the city. It is merely a one hour car drive from the center of Yogyakarta.
 
This beach can also be reached with public transportation.

• Visit the sand dunes: The sand dunes were formed to the strong winds. Parangtritis beach is the only beach in Indonesia that has these.
  
• Visit Parang Wedang: Located on the north shore, this natural hot water spring contains sulfur which is said to be beneficial to some skin diseases.
  
• LangseCave: On the east of Parangtritis, this cave is suitable for those seeking adventure. It is a cave at the rock wall in the slope of Gunung Kidul Mountain. At the bottom of this cave you will find a river with fresh water and coastal reefs at the sea.
  

Tip: Due to the constant, pleasant breeze of the ocean it is often not noticeable how hot the sun is, therefore necessary sun equipment should bepacked.
