Description
As well as Pompeii, lots of other buried villages from different eras fell victim to the volcano. Today it is largely dormant, but beneath the 3 km thick plug of solidified lava which fills the gorge, the magma still bubbles away deep underground. There is a path up to the crater of the volcano.
