Description
In 1706 August the Strong left this estate to his mistress, Countess Cosel, and then took it back again after the end of the liaison. From 1720 onwards plans by Pöppelmann and Longuelune were used to create a summer residence in a chinoiserie style, with a mirror-image design and connected by a pleasure garden. In the 100 years which followed, wings and the New Palace were added. In the mountain and water palace, the arts and crafts museum of the State Art Collections exhibits arts and crafts. Since 2006, the New Palace has been home to the Pillnitz Castle Museum. The most famous thing growing in the castle park is the Pillnitz Camellia. This probably made its way from Japan to Dresden towards the end of the 18th century. In 1905, it withstood a fire in its wooden shelter in temperatures of minus 20°C. Since 1992, the plant, which is almost 9 m high, has been protected in a glass house in winter. From mid-February to April, it sprouts thousands of red blossom flowers (costs one euro to see this). The parkland complex with its gardens, pavilions and ponds is most charming in the early hours of the morning or in the last vestiges of sunlight (entrance from 5 a.m. until darkness sets in). Take part in a guided tour of the park or attend one of the open-air concerts or a tea ceremony held in the Chinese Pavilion.

The palace's most famous plant is the Pillnitz Camellia. From mid February to April it is festooned with thousands of red blooms.
