Description
Red Square is the Kremlin's front yard and something like Russia's living room. Originally a market and rallying place, it was also called the "Fireplace" because the market stalls burned down so often. It has only been known as "Red Square" since the time of Ivan IV and this has nothing to do with its colour: "Red" relates to the Russian word for "beautiful". A new feature of the square is an ice-skating rink which is set up in winter opposite the Lenin Mausoleum.
Moscow's parade ground with Lenin Mausoleum and GUM, the luxury department store - people stroll here until late in the night.
