General description: Reichstag Parliament
The Reichstag Building is the house of the German Parliament in Berlin. Since it was constructed from 1884-1894 and was based on plans by Paul Wallot, was given a glass dome in the mid-1990s, the building has acted as a tourist magnet.Queue for a View from the Glass Dome
Visitors are willing to queue up for hours to be able to climb the spiral steps leading up to the top of the dome or sit on the roof terrace of Käfer restaurant. The modern glass dome above the venerable old building attracts the crowds. From the highest point of the towering glass dome you get a fantastic view of the new government district. Below this is the chamber where since 1999 the members of the lower house of the German parliament have debated policy issues.
The glass came after the fire
After the Reichstag fire in 1933 and the battles to secure control of Berlin, the building was reconstructed from 1961-1972 and was home to an exhibition on German history which can now be seen in the German Cathedral. The first German parliament of the reunified Germany met here in 1990. So that the building could be used to house the lower house of the German parliament, it was completely gutted based on designs by the architect Sir Norman Foster and topped off with the glass dome.

The whole building is really interesting and the glass roof is just the cherry on top. It is possible to arrange guided tours and meetings with members of parliament as long as you book in advance. They are especially group friendly. Also if you ... Read more
