Description
Although he was born in Leiden, the painter Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is one of Amsterdam's most famous sons, spending most of his life in the city of canals - not always under the happiest circumstances. It was not only his lovers but also his financial situation which constantly changed. In 1639 he bought this house in the then Jewish quarter. Financial pressure forced him to sell the house in 1660 and move into rented accommodation. In 1908 the house on Jodenbreestraat was refurbished and turned into a museum, and an annexe was built in 1999. The new part contains the world's biggest collection of the artist's etchings, copper engravings and drawings. The older section of the house, including the studio, has been furnished as it might have been in Rembrandt's day.
The house in which the painter of "The Nightwatch" lived is home to an almost complete collection of his graphic works.
