Description
The most valuable exhibit in the museum is the Dionysus Mosaic. It originates from the dining room of a Roman villa from the 4th century. At the world economic summit in 1999, the world's most powerful leaders dined on the work of art, which was protected by a heavy slab of glass. Sadly the mosaic was badly damaged by splinters when in 2007 a wooden beam which was torn off during a hurricane penetrated the museum's armoured glass pane. Another notable monument is the tomb of the veteran Poblicius (from around 40 AD). Make sure you set aside enough time to have a good look at the many interesting archaeological finds chronicling Cologne's Roman origins.
Wander through the everyday life of ancient Cologne, past the 1700 year old Dionysios Mosaic, off which former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Bill Clinton have dined together.
