Description
The "Frari" as Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is known for short, is the second major Gothic mendicant order church in the city, alongside the Dominican Santi Giovanni e Paolo. In contrast to their self-imposed modesty and the very simple outer walls, the Franciscans who built it did not exactly hide their influence under a bushel inside: a tour reveals the Frari to be an art shrine of the very highest order. One is immediately struck by the pyramid tomb of sculptor Antonio Canova. Opposite one can see Titian's tomb and his so-called Pesaro Madonna. In the choir chapels and the sacristy there are precious altarpieces by Bartolomeo Vivarini and Giovanni Bellini, a sculpture of St. John the Baptist, and the composer Claudio Monteverdi is buried here. What irresistibly draws the eye, however, is the Assunta (Assumption of Mary) floating above the high altar, a stroke of genius by Titian, whose ingenious colouring and completely innovative and dramatically skyward-reaching composition towards the end of the Renaissance was already pointing painting's way to the Baroque.
Majestic basilica with masterpieces by Titian, Donatello, Canova and many others.
