Description
This five-winged building is one of the most outstanding historic buildings around today. The state parliament meets in the castle, and there is also a castle museum. Following extensive renovation work, the Grand Ducal family moved in with great pomp and ceremony on 26 May 1857. The bishop's house and the Great New House, both of which can be identified by their rich terracotta decor, date from the 16th and 17th century. The large equestrian statue at the portal shows what the famous Obodrite prince Niklot was imagined to be like 150 years ago. The castle gardens with their beautiful collection of ancient trees are also well worth a visit.
With its turrets and bay windows, Schwerin Castle could come straight from a book of fairy tales.
