Description
Duke Carl Eugen is said to have discovered the location for this hunting and pleasure lodge on one of his hunting trips. The splendid rococo building, whose exotic gardens were once tended to by the father of Friedrich Schiller, was built from 1764-69. Solitude underwent thorough renovation between 1972 and 1983. The ballroom dome, murals and ceiling paintings, marble hall, palm tree rooms, Red Cabinet and White Hall give a sense of the splendour of a bygone era. The Solitude cemetery is the last place of rest for members of the Weizsäcker family and the choreographer John Cranko. Since 1990, the officer and cavalier building has been home to the Solitude Palace Academy, a kind of Villa Massimo for art scholarship students from all over the world, some of whom reside in the living quarters. It is a pleasant stroll to the picturesque Bärensee lakes with the little Bärenschlössle castle. There is a lot going on around the lakes when the weather is good at the weekend. 5 km away you will find the Solitude race track, which used to host races until 1965. It has experienced a revival among motorsport fans in recent years.
Splendid pleasure palace surrounded by greenery, with lovely walking tracks through the woods.
