Description
After the first Semper Opera House burnt down in 1869, the second Theatre Royal was built from 1871-1878, on the same site and again designed by Gottfried Semper, in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. Following its destruction on 13 February 1945 and the safeguarding of the facade up until 1956, the decision was taken to reconstruct it largely in its original style. On 13 February 1985, the 40th anniversary of its destruction, the Semper Opera House was reopened. When you visit, look out for the amazing marble imitations in the vestibules, the pictures on the plafond ceiling in the auditorium and the double-windowed clock above the stage. The bronze Panther Quadriga above the portal was created by Johannes Schilling, and the sculptures of Goethe and Schiller next to the entrance by Ernst Rietschel.
Gottfried Semper's world famous opera house, with its first class ensemble and orchestra, has a 500-year tradition, but had to be rebuilt on a number of occasions.
