Description
Let's build such a huge church that posterity will think us mad." The builders of Seville Cathedral (15th century) followed their orders to the letter, creating the biggest Gothic church in the world. Directly behind the south door you can see four stone bearers holding a sarcophagus which, since 1902, has held the remains of Christopher Columbus. That these are indeed his remains was proven by a DNA test in 2006. However, the skeleton is not intact. Inside the church, the highlight is the high altar, which displays a dizzying variety of shapes, and took one hundred years to complete. As almost everywhere in Andalusia, the cathedral was built on the site of a mosque, of which the orange court and the "Giralda", a 12th century minaret, remain. During work on the bell tower in the 16th century, a Renaissance-style tip was added to the minaret, crowned with a 4 m high figure with standards and holding a palm branch. This "giraldillo" (from Spanish "girar": to turn) turns in the wind, giving its name to the entire 87 m high tower. Those who climb to the top of the giralda via a ramp are rewarded with the best views of old Seville.
Seville is home to the world's largest Gothic church.
