Spinalonga/KalidoniaThe uninhabited Greek island Spinalonga lies in the western gulf of Mirabella. The island is part of Elounda, in the district of Agios Nikolaos in the northeastern part of Crete.
Just off the coast of Crete, the Island of Spinalonga boasts beautifulviews. The official name of the island is Kaldon. During Venetian occupation the island was carved out of the coast and Spinalonga was formed.
Location
Spinalonga lies in the northern entrance of the gulf of Elounda, 160 meters from the northern coast. The length from north to south is 440 meters, and the widest part is 250 meters.
History
The island was supposed to protect the harbor of Olous. On the old ruins, the Venecians built a fort in the 16th century.
In 1903, the island was used for the isolation of Leprosy patients.
Spinalonga has appeared in a number of television series and films.

How to get to Spinalonga
In the villages of Elounda and Plaka there are boats which transport visitors across to the island for a day trip. Here visitors can explore the many monuments and buildings which are still in good shape. There are also houses with the graves of the people which used to live there, a very interesting place to visit on holiday in Crete.

The climate Create is Mediterranean. The summers are hot and the winters quite mild. The average temperature in the summer is between 26 and 28 Celsius, and in the winter between 8 and 10 Celsius.
