Description
At one end of Red Square one can see the colourful onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, the symbol of Moscow or, indeed, of Russia itself. Czar Ivan the Terrible allegedly had the builders blinded, so that they could never build anything comparable. The unique masterpiece was erected between 1550-1560 to commemorate the capture of the Tatar capital, Kazan. Eight churches, each with differently coloured and decorated domes, surround a ninth church in the middle. The floor plan is based on the shape of a Russian Orthodox cross. The lofty rooms are adorned with 400 icons and old frescos. In the direction of the River Moskva, the Square is sometimes jokingly referred to as Sheremetyevo III (I and II are Moscow airports) because it was here that the German adventurer Mathias Rust landed in his light aircraft in 1987.
Its domes float above Red Square like a vision from the Arabian Nights.
