Description
The northern gate of the city heading out towards Neuss was called Eagle Gate, during the period of French occupation (1794- 1814) Porte d'Aigle, then phonetically Germanised to "Eigel". Anybody who donated their wedding ring for melting in the First World War was allowed to knock a nail into the wooden sculpture of the "Kölsche Boor" (Cologne Farmer), who embodied the city's fighting spirit. On the left-hand tower at this spot you will today see a stone relief of this medieval farmer. The inscription proves that in later epochs it was turned into a symbol of loyalty to the empire: "Halt fass am Rich do kölsche Boor, loss et nit fall ov söös ov soor" (Stick firm to the empire, you Cologne farmer, don't let it fall, whether the times are good or bad). In the right-hand tower niche the remains of a wooden rescue boat hang in memory of those who died on the "MS Cölln" in the First World War.
The northern city gate is evidence of Cologne's turbulent history and the mighty fortifications which once protected the medieval city.
