Description
After undergoing extensive and presumably spectacular renovation work at a dizzy height in 2005, Stuttgart's landmark is once again as resplendent as it was on 5 February 1956, the day when it was opened. Designed and built under the supervision of Fritz Leonhardt, Rolf Gutbrod and Erwin Heinle, the tower, which was constructed using prestressed concrete, is regarded as a prototype for all television and radio towers throughout the world. Today it is operated by the German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk. The concrete needle protrudes 216.61 m up into the sky. The four-storey "basket", which among other things contains technical service rooms and a panoramic terrace, is at a height of 152.4 m. The lift travels up to the viewing platform at lightning-fast speed. From no other point in Stuttgart do you get as good a view of the city, of the vineyards in the Neckar valley, the Swabian countryside stretching as far as the mountains, the Black Forest and the Forest of Odes as you do from the television tower. On some days, you can even enjoy a panoramic view of the peaks of the mountains in the German, Austrian and Swiss Alps.
This elegant concrete needle is one of Stuttgart's best-known landmarks.
