General description: The 1896 Olympic Stadium
The Panathinaiko Stadium (Panathenaic Stadium) was the stadium chosen to be the first to hold the Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896. The Olympic Games started in Ancient Greece and so Athens was chosen as the spot for the inaugural modern Games. It is an impressive site and is open to be visited by the public. It is highly recommended, even for those not interested in sport.
