Tulum is one of the last cities to have been inhabited by the Mayans before the Spanish Old World diseases wiped them out. Of the coastal Mayan sites it is one of the best preserved and consequently has become a popular tourist destination.
 
Zama - City of Dawn
Tulum may have been known as Zama in previous times because it faces the sunrise. It was at it's hight between the 13th and 15th centuries. The site is now divided into four main tourist areas; the pueblo (town), the zona hotelera (or hotel zone) and the biosphere reserve; Sian Ka'an.
 
Visiting Tulum
Many different tour operators and most hotels will offer this tour. Entrance costs 4.50USD if not included in the tour price. Remember to take a sunhat as there is not much shade on the tour.
