A place travelers can visit The Sphinx
Reviews: The Sphinx
General description: The Sphinx
The Great Sphinx of Giza, half pharaoh, half lion is a mighty beast measuring 75m long, 20m high and 6m wide.Sun god, Guardian of the Necropolis, Guardian of the Pyramids? Or maybe the Guardian of an underground Temple or underground chamber? Or perhaps the only visible part of a gigantic group of animal sculptures that still remain buried in the desert sand?
The Sphinx: Majestic, Mystical and Marvelous.
Egyptologists are still debating the secret of its purpose and its age. Many believe that it was built during the reign of the pharaoh Khafra who also built the second Pyramid in Giza. Others believe it already exited thousands of years earlier. Time and again the Sphinx has been freed from the desert sands. One such evacuation by Thutmosis IV is reported on a plaque which is found between its front paws. Legend says the Sphinx visited Thutmosis in a dream and promised him the crown if he freed him from the sand. Thutmosis did so and became the Pharoah.
Getting to the Pyramids and Sphinx
Bus: Air-conditioned buses leave every 20 minutes to the Pyramids from the airport and Heliopolis. They stop next to the Egyptian Museum on their way to Giza. Tickets cost 2EGP but prices are subject to change.
Taxi: Yellow Taxis have meters and air conditioning. The black and white Taxis can be found anywhere in Cairo and you will need to haggle for a price. They may also try and take you to many other locations in order to charge you more for the ride. Be very clear that you want to go straight to the destination and will not pay for anything else.
