Description
Its reputation extends way beyond the borders of Germany. It is inextricably linked to the Thomaner choir, one of the best boys' choirs in Germany, and its most famous cantor: Johann Sebastian Bach. Carl Seffner's Bach monument dating from 1908 in front of the southern portal commemorates the composer. His mortal remains were transferred here in 1950 from the destroyed St John's Church. The roots of the Thomas Choir date back to the 13th century. At this time, there was already a church building on the site of the present-day St Thomas Church. It was the starting point for the Augustinian monastery, which was bequeathed by Margrave Dietrich. The scholars at this institution received, among other things, training in liturgic chanting. When the Thomaners are not on their travels and it is not school holidays, you can for a small contribution enjoy listening to motets and cantata at 6 p.m. on Fridays and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Martin Luther preached here on Whit Sunday in 1539, and this date is considered to be when the Reformation took hold in Saxony. Two of the stained-glass windows in the choir vestry are dedicated to Luther and Bach. The latest commemorative window commemorates Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The building itself has been frequently reconfigured. In 1496 the Romanesque main aisle was replaced with a late-Gothic hall. It is spanned by an unusually steep roof, whose 63 degree incline makes it the steepest in Leipzig. The 68 m high tower was given its baroque crest in 1702. The large area of greenery in front of St Thomas Church has become a popular meeting place for young people.
The steepest church roof in Germany, one of its best choirs - the "Thomaner", and the most famous choirmaster, Johann Sebastian Bach.
For a small contribution, visitors can enjoy motet and cantata by the Thomas choir on Fridays at 18.00 and Saturdays at 15.00.
