General description: Tsukiji fish market

The Tsukiji Market, full name; The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, is the world's biggest whole sale fish and seafood market as well as selling fruits and vegetables, meat and flowers. It is located in the center of Tokyo and is a huge tourist attraction.
 
A center of trade
The market is a huge center of trade and more than 400 different types of seafood are available from the most expensive caviar right down to cheap seaweed. Over 65,000 people work there and around 5.5 billion US dollars worth of goods flow through the market annually. The goods are sold through auction and most ofthe activity takes place between 5:30 - 8am.
 
The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market
The market is divided into two sections; the inner and outer market. The inner market is where the famous tuna auctions and the wholesale business takes place and a lot of it is off limits to tourist so as not to disrupt the daily business. The outer market is public friendly with retail shops and restaurants especially for tourists. There are some rules which must be followed when visiting.
 
Visiting the Tsukiji Market
Visitors to the Tuna auction is limited to 120 per day on a first come first serve basis. you can apply from 5am at the Osakana Fukyu Center (Fish Information Center) at the Kachidoki Gate. The wholesale area is open to tourists after 9am but you must be aware that it is a working environment and try not to get in the way.
 
Getting there
Get the subway to either Tsukiji Station or Tsukiji Shijo Station. It takes around 10mins from Tokyo station.
