The Uffizi Gallery is the primary art museum in Florence and one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world.
 
Galleria degli Uffizi
This building, open on the Arno side, was commissioned by Cosimo I de'Medici, designed by Giorgio Vasaris and built from 1559-1581 to house the city's officials. In the meantime the 39 rooms on the upper floor of the Galleria degli Uffizi contain one of the world's most extensive and famous collections of paintings, while the second floor is home to the Gabinetto dei Disegni e deel Stampe, a collection of 104,000 drawings and prints. The floors below are currently being converted into new exhibition space for the Grandi Uffizi, the so-called "Great Uffizi". This space will be used for anew presentation of the works already on show, as well as to display many of the pieces which have been in storage for years.
 
What to see at the Uffizi Gallery
The museum's paintings are in chronological order and classified byschools. The main focus is on the Italian Renaissance. The broad corridors off the exhibition rooms contains Greek and Roman statues, and Flemish tapestries. The most valuable statues are onpurpose-built plinths in the Tribuna, a splendidly decorated, octagonal room, which was one of the first to be specially designed for displaying works of art. By following the signage, one comesfirst to the huge Gothic altar panels by Cimabue and Giotto, followed by works of the 14th century Sienese School, and the great painters of the Early Renaissance: Masaccio, Piero della Francesca and Sandro Botticelli whose works, including the "Birth of Venus", have their own dedicated hall. Leonardo da Vinci's "Adoration of the Magi" is also there. Apart from these precious statues, the Tribunaalso contains numerous portraits of the Medicis, by Bronzino, Pontormo and other masters of Mannerism. In Halls XIX-XXIII, amongst the Museum's oldest, there are further Renaissance paintings. On thewest side of the building one can see works by Michelangelo (Tondo Doni), Raphael (Madonna del Cardellino), Titian (Venus of Urbino) and works by the Venetian artists Veronese, Giorgione, Tintorettoand Caravaggio. Then it is the turn of the Dutch painters including Rubens (Portrait of Isabella Brandt), Rembrandt and van Dyck. Between Halls XXV and XXIV there is a door leading off to theCorridoio Vasariano, a corridor which connects the Uffizi with the Palazzo Pitti, via the Ponte Vecchio and which contains the greatest collection of artists' self-portraits. Guided tours are also available at the Uffizi.

The Uffizi Gallery is however also a piece of art in itself. The Architecture of the exterior as well as the grand halls are well worth the visit.  It is not just the fabulous art treasures that make a visit worthwhile - you can also enjoy a splendid view from the roof cafe.

The Uffizi Gallery is a "must see" for those interested in Art.
