Description
After a fire at the Barfüsser abbey church in Niederdorf which had been rebuilt for opera performances, the decision was taken to build a new venue at Bellevue. The Vienna architects Fellner and Helmer were commissioned to do the work and they pulled out plans for a building which was in fact originally going to be built in Krakow. After 20 months of construction, the splendid neo-baroque theatre, which features elements of the traditional castle structure, was opened. In the 1980s, the building was provided with an annexe which in common parlance is referred to as "meatloaf" because of its pink colour and rectangular shape.
