Description
This buoyant complex owes its martial name to its location on the former city fortifications. From 1709-1732 a unique baroque complete artwork was produced here on behalf of August the Strong and based on designs by the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser. Grouped around the rectangular courtyard with water features in mirror-inverted form are the rampart and glockenspiel pavilion as well as four corner pavilions which are connected by arched and long galleries. The main access is through the crown gate with its onion dome and Polish king's crown supported by eagles. Passing through the rampart pavilion you get to the playful Nymph Bath and to the roofs of the galleries. You must make sure you take in the view of the complete complex and go for a walk along the balustrade as far as the glockenspiel pavilion. Its bells made from Meissen porcelain play melodies by Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach (Easter to Dec. daily at 10.15 a.m., 14.15 p.m. and 18.15 p.m.). From 1847-55 the ensemble was closed off on the Elbe side with a gallery building which was designed by Gottfried Semper and is home to the famous "Old Masters". Following destruction sustained during the war, work began in 1945 on its reconstruction and this lasted until the mid-1960s. A romantic treat is an evening of concert or ballet in the Zwinger courtyard.
This magnificent and superbly designed Baroque estate was Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann's masterpiece, commissioned by Augustus the Strong.
Romantic: an evening at the Zwingerhof with a concert or ballet.
