5th Day of Jami's Western USA Travel Journal - Shopping Downtown San Francisco

November 22nd, 2010

Getting to downtown
After recovering from the first days I decided to give San Francisco a new chance and go to downtown San Francisco. Getting to downtown is really easy from the Hights. You just hop on bus No. 6 or bus No. 71. Both go via Hight Street to Market Street. The buses come every 10 minutes or so. So you do not have to wait for a long time. The bus takes about 15-20 minutes to get there. I stepped of the bus at Market Street and 5th street which was a very good starting point for a downtown tour.

Downtown San Francisco
Downtown San Francisco is not like other city centers you might know from European cities. Even there are cars everywhere. However, alongside the streets are quite a lot of shops. When you get of at Market Street, you are in the center. Because Market Street is basically downtown. I heard or read somewhere that you can compare Market Street with 5th Avenue. It is true, Market Street has a lot of shops. However, designer shops are around the corner at Union Square. Union Square is a concrete hill with a coffee shop on top. Around Union Square is Macy's, Victorias Secret, Lacoste, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton and so on. For a compilation of all of them go to Saks Fifth Avenue. I heard of them before but could not remember what they stood for. So I went in and found a paradise of fashion. Unfortunately, also a quite expensive paradise. However, what is interesting to know is that the higher you get the cheaper the prices are. While you get on the first floor coats for USD 3000+ you find at the third floor already some for USD 400. Of course, the designers in the higher levels are not that well known as Armani, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino etc. but they are also very good quality. Also at the Union Square you find a good book store where I finally got my Lonely Planet. I usually never travel without it when I am abroad for more than four weeks. So, I spend the rest of the day reading in that book to plan for the upcoming days.

Good Thai restaurant
As I just read in the guide. San Francisco has more restaurants per capita than any other American city. So, I guess I need to try at least some of the restaurant. Since I wanted to have something Asian with noodles I just went into the next Thai just around the corner. I had just a bowl with noodle soup and it was very delicious. I forgot the name of the restaurant but you can easily find it. It is on Hight Street between Ashbury Street and Masonic Avenue.
