6th Day of Jami's Western USA Travel Journal - Golden Gate Park
November 23rd, 2010
Today was a work out day. So I looked around where I could do some sports. And of course, you can always go to a gym. Most better hotels downtown have a gym. But I like to spend some time outside. Directly in front of my apartment is the panhandle. It is a one block wide and 8 blocks long park. It is not perfect for jogging because on the north and south of the block is a major street with 4 lanes. So you can imagine how your lungs will react on that. However, I started at the Panhandle and jogged to Golden Gate Park.
Golden Gate Park
The Golden Gate Park is probably the biggest park in San Francisco. It is about 9 blocks wide and 50 blocks long. I am not 100% sure but I think that the Golden Gate Park is even bigger than the Central Park in Manhattan/New York. Since I wanted to have as much nature as possible I tried a small unpaved path uphill. That was not the best idea I ever had because up there was no official path any more and I entered the sleeping place of homeless people. Well, I did not meet anybody but I just guess that from all the stuff that was up there like blankets. So, it is better to stay on official tracks. Unfortunately, most of these tracks are paved which is not so good for ankles.
I haven't seen a lot of the park but I encountered already something special. In the Golden Gate Park is the first official Aids monument. It is a beautiful grove with some opportunities to sit. And in the middle there is a memorial marble stone with a lot of names on it. The purpose of that memorial grove is according to the signs that the builders wanted to give those who have HIV and those who lost beloved because of Aids a place to mourn. I found that place worthy to visit and to mention.
