HolidayCheck Idea: Coastal Walking in Madeira
For the adventurous traveller Madeira offers many exciting walking opportunities in the inland Levada areas. Here you can see the gushing waterfalls and stunning scenery. However for
the average walker a coastal walk is much more relaxing.
Setting off from the hotel district of Funchal, Complexo Balnear do Lido, it is best to head down the hill to the town’s main public park, he Passeio Público do Lido. From the park walk in a westerly direction, when you reach the end of the park, you will find a viewing point looking out over the Atlantic. From here you are able to follow the coast.
Things worth seeing along the coast:
• Natural Volcanic Rock Pools
• Statue of Gonçalves Zarco
• Praia Formosa an Yacht club ( also the perfect place to refresh with a drink or snack)
The walk back is not a strenuous one as the coastal ground is much flatter than inland areas of the island. However if you wish to walk further it is possible to use public transport to return to Funchal.
