The Colosseum

Technically this is a ruin but this ancient amphitheater is where the gladiators fought with wild animals, and you can imagine the roar of the lions and crowds that cheered on the bloody spectacle. The imposing circular space is a triumph of Roman architecture – classic Doric, Corinthian and Ionic styles are represented here. It’s a magnificent place to wander and amazing that this structure is in the center of bustling Rome. This is by far the most famous of all Rome attractions. www.rome.info/colosseum

The Vatican

Trevi Fountain

The man in the middle is god of the sea Neptune who is riding a chariot in the shape of a sea shell. This is one of the most crowded places in Rome so either be prepared to jostle among other tourists or come in the early morning or evening. www.trevifountain.net

Whatever the reason, it is one of the most beautiful of Rome attractions and a superb place to people watch, rest your legs and perch on the steps.
