Top 5 San Francisco Attractions
The magnificent city of San Francisco is an open air world of fun, hills and entertainment. From watching seals hang out at the city’s most famous pier to hopping on a cable car and riding up the
steepest hills you’ve ever seen, this is a city that encourages being outside and taking in the city from a variety of vantage points and experiences.
The Golden Gate Bridge
Whether you walk it, cycle it or drive it, this awe-inspiring suspension bridge is one the most extraordinary San Francisco attractions. The bright red curves and views of the city and the bay is amazing. Both ends have vista points with parking – great places to get a fuller view of the bridge and excellent for photographs. www.goldengatebridge.org
Fisherman’s Wharf
It’s touristy and a little kitsch, but this is still one the top San Francisco attractions and well worth a visit. This working wharf straddles the San Frncisco Bay. It is home to dozens of fishing boats, is home to oodles of restaurants, shops, several museums (including a wax museum) and a World War II submarine. But one of the most enjoyable parts of the area is at Pier 39, where hundreds of California Sea Lions congregate. You’ll know when you get close – they make quite a bit of noise! www.fishermanswharf.org
Lombard “the Crookedest” Street
OK, technically this is not the crookedest street in the world, but that doesn’t make it less fun. Curving around the hairpin turns yourself, or simply watching other cars slowly weave their way down this street is endlessly entertaining. It might be a simple activity but this street is most definitely one of the most fun San Francisco attractions. www.sftravel.com/lomabardcrookedstreet.html
Chinatown
One of the greatest San Francisco attractions involves leaving another continent. This is not only the oldest Chinatown in North America, but this is also the largest Asian community outside of, well Asia. The neighborhood sprawls across central San Francisco and visiting it makes you feel like you just landed in China. Wander around and check out the shops and markets before choosing a restaurant and indulging in a fantastic meal. Be sure to ask the staff for recommendations or what the day’s special is: some of the tastiest items are not listed on the menus. www.sanfranciscochinatown.com
Ride on a Cable Car
Antique cable cars still serve as a primary mode of transport in parts of San Francisco. The open-air carriages sound and feel like you have stepped back in time, and you can use them not only to get around but also as a hop-on-hop off self guided tour. All routes make their way up and down the famously hilly streets. Who knew that something as simple and affordable as taking public transportation counts as one of the best San Francisco attractions? www.sfcablecar.com
