Top 5 Venice Attractions

From a romantic gondola ride to a sun-splashed day at Piazza San Marco, Venice is like no other city on earth. You could easily wander around and get lost, peering onto the charming canal ways and the super-wide Grand Canal, but there is a lot to see in this beautiful place. Read on for our favorite Venice attractions.

Piazza san Marco

The city’s largest plaza is also one of the top Venice attractions. This massive expanse of space is unique in a place filled with narrow streets and winding canals. One entire side of the square faces the open water (the vast Grand Canal) give the place an open, airy feel. Oodles of pigeons like to hang out here (and children love chasing them). The piazza is also home to some of the most expensive cafes in town. But splurge once, just for the chance to people watch and observe the sea of people weaving their way through the area.

Basilica San Marco

Perched right on Piazza San Marco is this brilliant example of Byzantine architecture. It is known for its 5 spectacular bulbous domes that loom at the top, which make it look a bit more like a mosque that belongs in Istanbul rather than a church and one of the best Venice attractions. It features stunning mosaics inside, a 500-year-old clock tower and the pinnacle of the interior: the Gothic altar known as Pala d’Oro (Golden Altar) is splendidly lavish with encrusted jewels and exquisite enamel sections. www.basilicasanmarco.it

Enjoy a Gondola Ride

It’s pricey but wow, it is easy to see why this is one of the most popular Venice attractions. It is unbelievable romantic and relaxing as you step into the wobbly boat and float your way across the city. It’s like a sightseeing tour you can do while you recline, passing countless pretty facades, squares and ancient bridges. The city has that wonderful sense of crumbling grandeur but vibrant Italian spirit permeates throughout.

Rialto Bridge

You’ll encounter many bridges during your visit but none of them will compare to the Rialto Bridge. It’s a stunning picture and it is easy to see why this counts as one of the top Venice attractions. Elegant and wide, the bridge is made of stone and lined with arcades on both sides. The monumental steps along the bride are postcard-worthy and passing under it on a gondola ride is a true highlight.

Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale)
This extraordinary museum is one of the most amazing Venice attractions. It is housed in a magnificent palazzo (palace) right on Saint Mark’s Square and is known for its Gothic architecture. Besides being a gorgeous building to wander around, the art inside is fantastic and contains pieces by venetian master like Tintoretto and Titian. Don’t miss the Sala del Senato, the Tintorett art-filled grand room where the santé of the Republic of Venice used to meet and the arcade statues by Calendario—especially the one entitled “Noah’s Drunkenness.” www.museiciviciveneziani.it/frame.asp?musid=8&sezione=musei
