Kiev
The capital of the Ukraineand home of that famous chicken dish, Kiev has lots to offer. It is where two of the 'Seven Wonders of the Ukraine' are based; those being the Monasteryof the Caves,and the Santa Sophia Cathedral. HolidayCheckers recommend visiting these whilst in Kiev, as well as the Golden Gate. The metro of Kievis an engineering wonder, with most of the stations featuring palearches and bright decoration which were built in the 1970’s and1980’s.
Chernobyl
A trip to the Ukraine would just not be complete without a visit toChernobyl. It is now the largest ghost town in the world, due to the explosion of the power plant in 1986. Nowadays, tours happen almost every day. They pass through the ‘Zone of Estrangement’, and the ‘Red Forest’,where the trees are now a deep orange colour because of whath appened. The reactor can be viewed, and some tours organise meeting the inhabitants which live there.
Odessa
Tourists flock to Odessa, to bask in the sunshine and bathe in the temperate Black Sea. Lots of HolidayCheck users have visited the Potemkin Stairs,the symbol of Odessa, which are regarded as the city’s officialentrance. They were built to create an optical illusion while you walk on them, as from the bottom the landings are invisible, and from the top, the stairs cannot be seen. Odessa is renowned for itstherapeutic spas and multicultural atmosphere, and it is even has itsown dialect of Russian. Odessa is also where the Seventh-Kilometre Market takes place; the largest outdoor market in Europe. Crimea The coast line of Crimea is made up of bays and ports scattered around its edges, with the Crimean Mountainsrising up from the south. The tourist attractions there include theLivadia Palace, Mount Mithridat and the Swallow’sNest,one of the most decorative castles on the coast near Yalta.
