Panama is much more than a canal and you want to plan a few days in Panama City to explore this amazingly modern and cosmopolitan city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the jungle.
Things you must see in Panama City are:
Casco Viejo Old colonial quarters, kind of Panamanian version of Old Havana
Miraflores locks
At only 10-15 minutes from the City Center, this is a must see
Amador CausewayPanama Canal breakwater. Great for jogging, restaurants, cycling, great views of the city skyline
Ancon HillHike up the hill for great views of the city, Panama Canal and Amador Causeway
Embera Indian Village
Visit an authentic indian village along the Chagres river; unique experience at only 2 hours from Panama City
Train to Colon
It only leaves on weekdays and leaves Panama City in the morning (7 am) and returns at 6 pm. (1 hr trip). Colon is not safe but the nearby attractions are Gatun locks, Ft. Lorenzo and its neaerby beaches.
Nightlife
The night life in Panama is VERY good. Great restaurants too, very affordable. Enjoy and move your hips
The nearest nice beach from Panama City is Santa Clara. Don't visit Coronado beach. Not nice. Another day trip would be El Valle de Anton, a village inside a dormant volcano crater.
Like fishing? Go for peacock bass on Gatun lake. Success guaranteed!
